Stairway to…Heaven?

Well, in our house, definitely not.  The good news is that they only travel down to the basement, so they’re not in plain sight, nor are they heavily used.  Whew!  I know—such a first world problem.

After living with red wooden stairs covered in black rubber tread, with a random white stair smack dab in the middle, I finally decided to do something about it.

Anything.

Even if it meant that things were going to get worse before getting better—which, by the way, is usually the way it goes in the wonderful world of DIY.  At least in the Braham household.

After stockpiling images of stairs on Pinterest, I had a decent idea of what I wanted to do.  Check out the eye candy below.

Still, I was a little hesitant to make any permanent moves, because I didn’t want to spend much money, and I also wanted to be sure the stairs were safe.  But when you sit on your hands too long, they get antsy.  Hence, the halfway completed project…

At this point, I’ve painted the sides of the steps and removed the rubber treads.  I also snagged a few runners at IKEA, along with some cheap rug pads from the dollar store.  Hopefully I’ll be back soon with some finalized shots of the stairway…just as soon as I can figure out how to run the air compressor/nail gun without waking up Liam!
