When Your State Is On Fire…

Last year I truly thought Colorado Springs was going to burn to the ground.  All of it.

That was during the 2012 Waldo Canyon Fire, and even though our city didn’t come close to burning down completely, I’ve since felt differently about rain and hot days and dry lightening.  Liam was only one month old during last summer’s fires, so we took shelter in the Midwest for a week—although we weathered the worst of it in a 90 degree house with no air conditioning and closed windows to avoid the smoke.

Tragically, another fire burned the northern part of our city this summer, taking with it much of the lovely Black Forest area.  While I only knew one family who lost their home in the Waldo Canyon Fire, this year it hit closer to home, as at least four of my previous students’ homes were burned, plus one of a colleague.  This year, though, we were on family vacation during the exact time that the fire took place, so we missed it all.  I couldn’t even bring myself to pay attention to the news this time, as it becomes so consuming.  Thankfully, only four lives have been lost in these fires total.

In spite of all the devastation, our community has pulled together in some awesome ways.  We were able to attend an outdoor symphony featuring the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and the Flying W Ranch Wranglers (who lost their entire property to the Waldo fire last year).  You can see the burnt trees silhouetted in the photos below.

It was a lovely evening celebrating the spirit of a community rebuilding from the ashes, literally.

Sideways

Yeah, literally sideways.  Apparently the camera has to be horizontal while taking a video… For mom anyone inclined to crane their neck or turn their screen, enjoy.

Family Vaca 2013

June was full of travel, family, and loads of good times!

Liam and I spent several days in Valpo with my folks.  He even snuck in a lawn mower ride with Mimsie!

Then Matt flew in, and we enjoyed some time in Indy with his family.

We spent the next week hanging out on a lake in Cassopolis, Michigan with extended family on my mom’s side.  At one point there were 31 of us living together in the same house!  Thank goodness it was huge.

Gma, I mustache you a question.  : )

As a last minute surprise, my sister Hannah showed up—hitting a deer and getting pulled over by a cop on the way.  In her defense, it was a crazy day and the cop had mercy on her after hearing about the deer incident.  We’re so glad she was able to come up for a few days!

The classic “all the kiddos on the couch in their pjs”—I love these photos!  Thanks for the adorable shark jammies, AJ!  For the record, I’m dying over how well-behaved Harper and Lennon are in these pics.  They were so focused on their reward!  : )

And although they’re not pictured, the maple pecan doughnuts from the local Amish bakery were divine!

The last night of our trip was spent back in Indy, where we lived it up at the Westin Hotel downtown on the circle.  Matt and I enjoyed a morning walk along the canal (how in the world did I not know this existed?!), and Liam spent some quality time with Aunt Rach, Mimsie, and Popsie in the pool.

We cherish these times with family, as living 17 hours away makes them harder to come by.  As always, I wish I had taken more photos, but my hands tend to be fuller these days!  : )  Hope you’re all having a wonderful summer!
